MyPoints Review – Scam Or Legit?

How Does It Work?

As I suggested earlier the rewards program is fairly self explanatory. You spend money making purchases you normally would or are convince to do so, and earn points for it. Depending on the company, what promos they are currently running you can earn up to 40% back for purchases. To earn your points you shop through the MyPoints website, which gives you access to all the latest offers, coupons and promo codes for the businesses they have teamed up with. By clicking their links and making your purchase you receive points, but in doing so MyPoints gets the credit for the sale. In essence it is kind of like affiliate marketing links, MyPoints do all the work, and they will receive compensation or a percentage of the revenue from the businesses they refer to you.

The members dashboard itself is quite easy to navigate and lists all the stores that may interest you. You can also click through to current deals, coupons and the paid surveys. Along with a tally of your current points and daily tasks you can complete to get more points.

In terms of the paid surveys themselves, the tricky part in reviewing how much you can earn, is you need to be eligible for the surveys. Whilst their may be countless surveys on offer, you may only qualify for 10% of them. I spent 2 hours going through all the surveys I could and see whether I was eligible and how many points I could earn in that time. In total there were 43 surveys I tried to participate in, and I was able to qualify for 4 of them. Not an amazing run rate. So how much did I make, and how much could you earn from MyPoints? Lets take a look!

Can MyPoints Really Make You Money?

So in terms of making money, I think its important I make the distinction clear on what I will be doing when reviewing how much you can make. I will not be looking at how much you can save, and taking that into account for your “earnings”. With these programs the rewards and “money” you can earn is often massively propped up by cash back offers and promotions. This isn’t really an earning, but just a saving. Whilst saving money is awesome, and means ultimately more money in your pocket, its not extra money earn’t. 

This means that the only portion of MyPoints to look at in depth is the paid surveys. MyPoints has a feature to encourage you to take these surveys by offering bonus points for a limited amount of time each day. Below is a screen shot, and as you can see you could earn close to 200 extra points if you took these surveys. 

In my trialling I discussed earlier, in 2 hours I was able to earn close to 800 points. The previous rewards programs I have reviewed were fairly simple when looking at value. Points equalled a certain amount of dollars. For example ZoomBucks pays $1 per 1000 points.  My Points operates similar to a credit card rewards program. Your points vary in value depending on when how and with who you redeem them with. 

If you were to redeem your points for money, instead of a gift card, you need 3970 points minimum which will get you $25 on paypal. That will value your points at $0.006 per point. For gift cards as I said it depends on the time and with who you redeem, some examples are below and were available at the time of writing

• Amazon Gift Card – 790 points gets you a $5 gift card, valuing your points at the same as paypal, $0.006 per point.
• Nike Gift Card – 700 points gets you a $5 gift card, valuing your points at $0.007 per point.

That is just two examples, but they do vary from company to company. $0.006 to $0.007 difference may seem inconsequential, but as a percentage it equates to a 15% difference, so is a fairly significant difference. The moral of the story there is, spend your money wisely! Take advantage of the specials and promos to get the most out of your points!

MyPoints Red Flags

The good thing about MyPoints is there are no redflags as far as I can tell. In conducting my reviews I like to look at 4 general areas as red flags that can point the the program being a scam.

1. Are the founders, or company behind the program real and verifiable.
2. Does the program make wild and over zealous income claims.
3. Are testimonials real and verifiable.
4. What does the internet say?

MyPoints clearly has a legit and authentic company behind it and definitely does not make any crazy income claims such as “Earn $500 a day” or give offers of $50 up for you completing a survey. This program does present any of its own testimonials, but scams often use freelancers from sites like Fivver, Upwork or Freelancer to do paid testimonials. They are very easy to pick.

In terms of what the internet is saying, with any company what we expect to see if generally favourable reviews with scatterings of negative reviews. No company is infallible so if we saw 800 5 star reviews it may seem a little suspect. On the opposite end of the spectrum countless negative reviews would raise alarm bells of a scam. If people are getting scammed they want everyone to know!

The reviews I found were all mainly positive suggesting a nice number of surveys available, great redemption options and awesome customer support. Those that were negative generally centred around availability – you can only sign up in the US or Canada (I had to have a friend sign up for me from the US). The $25 minimum for the paypal redemption option and other case specific issues. All in all, nothing to be alarmed about at all. With all of that in mind, what is my verdict of MyPoints? 

MyPoints The Verdict! Scam or Legit?

MyPoints gets a thumbs up from me. This is clearly a legitimate rewards program and one of the more popular ones online. Does that mean I recommend it to make money online? Well no. If you want to SAVE money on purchases you already make, and make some pocket money on the side from time to time, then yes I recommend it. But you will be making $1-$2 an hour at best, so I do not “recommend” it as a way to make money online.

As with all rewards programs and paid survey sites they are fun little programs that can earn you $50 here and there or save you money on something you always wanted to buy. But they are not, of course, an online money making opportunity. So my recommendation for MyPoints is it is legit, and if you want to make some POCKET MONEY then give it a go. But if you are hoping for a more lucrative money making opportunity, something that could turn into a full time career earner, then this is not the way to do it.
